Over the past few weeks, some of us have been working behind the scenes on developing an attempt at communal learning. In our Western method of teaching, so much of the focus is placed upon individual performance and one-sided learning environments. We want to change that.
Thus, we are going to embark on a journey together through the gospel of Mark. Long neglected in lieu of Matthew, Luke and John, Mark has some valuable insights and avenues for learning just below the service. As part of this collaborative process, we'll be working our way through Ched Myers' excellent book "Binding the Strongman: A Political Reading of Mark's Story of Jesus." If you've never encountered any of Myers' work, this will be an opportunity to learn from someone whose perspective may differ from what "you've always been taught."
Here's how the structure will go: I'm looking to put together a small group of people (6) who will commit to this collaborative learning. This journey will not be short (in fact, the timetable we have laid out will span 6 weeks), nor will it be easy (you will need to commit to not only reading through the book according to the schedule, but also reading through Mark). Also, we intend to spend some time discussing and learning from one another through free conference calls (information will be provided), so we can all have the opportunity to speak instead of just write.
In addition, a few of us will help guide and lead the discussion through other "helps" which we may provide. Reading Myers' work on Mark may be a new and challenging undertaking for some, so we want to walk alongside one another through this process. I personally have never undertaken a project like this, but I am extremely excited about the opportunity to learn from others across the nation, and possibly the world.
So, if you're interested, here's what you need to do:
(1) Send me an email dustin@relationaltithe.com and let me know of your interest.
(I will welcome into the core group the first 6 emails I receive.)
(2) If you're interested in being involved and learning from others, you need to purchase a copy of Myers' book. I would suggest a place like www.abebooks.com to purchase a new or used copy.
(3) Eagerly await the "release" of the reading plan and calendar for this exciting endeavor.
Also, if you don't end up as a part of the initial 10-12 people, you are still free to participate in the online discussion (which will most likely occur on this site in the Discussion Room...somewhere). You just will be unable to participate in the phone calls --you know, since we can only have so many people talking at once
If you should have any questions, please feel free to either email me (at the address above) or ask them in this thread.
I'll post the reading plan as soon as I have it.

Sounds awesome! I'd love to read along and join in the conversation here. With a brand new baby, a crazy sleep schedule, and three other little ones to tend to, I won't commit myself to the whole conference call thing- LOL- although it's a brilliant idea. Brilliant.
So, if you will, please give me a heads up when you get the reading schedule laid out, so I can set aside some extra time to read. I'm gonna try and order the book this week.
Peace,
Jamie

Jamie,
I'll be posting the reading schedule this evening or tomorrow. We are shooting for starting on Oct. 1st.
Join in when you can. Even if you can't join the discussion, the book itself is still worth the read.

Here's the reading schedule for this journey:
For many of us, the life of Jesus is the central narrative which gives value to our life of faith. Yet, as Western Christians, we often fail to understand the depth of meaning contained within the gospel narratives as they have been handed down to us from generation to generation. This is especially true regarding the gospel of Mark.
In an effort to look deeply into the words of this gospel writer and reach a better understanding of the value and meaning which it held for both those who originally read it and those who heard it, we are going to begin a collaborative learning endeavor using Ched Myers' excellent work "Binding the Strong Man: A Political Reading of Mark's Story of Jesus." This is "collaborative" because we believe learning is not a solo project, but rather true, active learning happens when we're able to learn, study, converse, and debate with others. So, we want to invite you to take this journey with us as we actively pursue the story of Jesus in the Markan narrative.
(If you should decide to join this journey with us, please consider familiarizing yourself with the Markan narrative a few times before we undertake this project. It will help you in your own learning process immensely.)
Week 1 Forward, Preface, Afterword (448-457) and Ch. 1
Week 2 Ch. 2-3
Conference Call
Week 3 Ch. 4-7
Week 4 Ch. 8-10
Conference Call
Week 5 Ch. 11-13
Week 6 Ch. 14
Conference Call
If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with me via this email address: dustin@relationaltithe.com. Also, if you would like to be a part of this, please email me that as well. We are shooting for a start date of the beginning of October.
We look forward to you journeying with us.

I would really like to sign on to this, but I have a lot of school materials to get thru.
This looks like a great opportunity though
Maybe if it comes up again...

Okay. The book has been ordered (finally) and should be here in a few days. I'm sure I'll be a little behind you guys starting out, but hope to catch up quickly and join in the discussion. I'll be following along best I can until then.
Peace,
Jamie

Jamie,
We haven't officially started yet. I think we'll begin "week 1" next week. So, you're fine. I'll post a comment when we've officially started.

As of yesterday, we've officially begun this journey. For those of you who want to follow along with the discussion (and possibly participate), please look for the new discussion thread in the Discussion Room.
The schedule for reading, for those who are following along with the reading, is at the beginning of this thread.
Let the journey commence!
